Is it worth refuelling in France in 2026?

Rarely. With the French average now higher than Italy’s, crossing the border to fill up usually doesn’t pay off — it’s worth it mostly on the way back from a trip, when the detour is zero.

Is it worth refuelling in France?

The idea that you always save across the border is weak for France today: the French average is often in line with or above Italy’s, especially on gazole (diesel), traditionally expensive there. The French government rebate of past years has ended, and excise duties remain high.

There’s one exception that matters: the French national average hides huge gaps between motorway stations (very expensive) and supermarket pumps (Leclerc, Carrefour, Intermarché), which often cost much less. If you stop at a hypermarket pump just across the border, the maths can change — that’s why the calculator lets you enter the real price you see.

You pay in euros and cross freely (Schengen): no currency change, no customs. The deciding factor is the detour — the Ventimiglia–Menton stretch is about 12 km. It pays off mostly on the way back from the Riviera, when the fill-up costs no extra kilometres.
